The Uses of Hog Lard My arteries should be plugged solid that everything we ate was cooked or baked using lard. But so-far, I have no problems. I guess it was because we were always so active. I have a comfortable old pair of shoes that I use to work in my vegetable garden and in the yard with my flowers. The sole on one shoe was coming loose. I wrapped duct tape around it and I still use it. Back then, we had no duct tape. If a shoe sole came loose before you could get a new pair of shoes it might be fastened on by hog-rings. A hog-ring is a small clamp put in a pig’s nose to keep him from rooting. Those were used to hold the shoe soles on. We also had no super-glue, so everything was held together with baling wire or binder twine. The winter bath was taken either in the living-room by the fire or the kitchen in those round wash tubs we brought in with water put in it. A blanket was held up across the corners of the room for privacy. The first or oldest child took a bath first, then the next one, then the next one and down to the baby. That’s where the old saying comes from, “don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater,” because it would be kind of dirty by the time he took a bath.
