The Vanishing Printer Sunday, 21 July 2013 What is an effective teacher? According to my opinion, he/she is a person of intellect, of creativity, of perspective as to how to approach the method of teaching. An effective teacher is someone who puts the students first and foremost. He/she is a person who tries to engage the students regardless of their ability and capacity to learn. To add value to the subject matter in particular, and to the ‘business’ in general. This person may look at the subject from a different perspective or approach the subject matter from a different perspective. The teacher is always trying to motivate his/her students to look, to tackle and to complete the subject matter from diverging angles. In this way, the teacher can hope to touch upon the most effective approach to solving the problem of teaching and learning. Well because each student learns differently and cannot hope to understand when faced with a ‘one size fits’ all scenario. To take away the printer is not a positive move because it diminishes the teacher’s ability to create learning tools which add perspective to the content of any text book, which adds value to the subject matter in general and adds substance to the reputation of the ‘business.’ What is a teaching and learning faculty without a teacher’s perspective. By taking away the printer in my opinion, is tantamount to tying the teacher’s hands and committing him/her to a limited perspective as to how to teach the class. The students must come first and be foremost in the minds of all who espouse to be teachers and trainers. The teacher should be able to approach the printer without fear or favour and create work which adds perspective and value to the material given in the text and let the students decide. By taking away the printer this may cause more complaints because not all students can understand the content of the text. This makes the printer invaluable as it adds perspective and helps to engage all the students. Education is not always about the money. Baxter should be seen by the wider academic community as an innovator and not like all the other English Schools out there busy chasing the money. It should look to add value to its courses by all means necessary, to build on its reputation by adding facilities and not looking to take them away. By taking away the printer without a word, without some indication as to the problems associated with its use and function is tantamount to a slap in the face, to all those who profess to be teachers and trainers. How can a learning and teaching department aim for excellence when the very tool designed to add perspective and value to the teaching method is taken away without a word. Perhaps it would be better to look for work in and English School which can boast to the ownership of at least a printer. Otherwise, I can offer to bring in my own and a ream of paper which would cost about ten dollars a week to take five classes. ‘What a world.’ Frank
