The Very Thought Of You~Nancy Wilson Nancy Wilson (born 20/2/1937) is an American singer with more than 70 albums, and three Grammy Awards. She has been labeled a singer of blues, jazz, cabaret and pop; a consummate actress; and the complete entertainer. The title she prefers, however, is song stylist. She has received many nicknames including Sweet Nancy, The Baby, Fancy Miss Nancy and The Girl With the Honey-Coated Voice. The Very Thought of You is a pop standard published in 1934, with music and lyrics by Ray Noble. In addition to Nobles own hit recording of the song with his orchestra, featuring the vocals of Al Bowlly, there was also a popular version recorded that same year by Bing Crosby. A decade later, the song was on the charts again in a version by Vaughn Monroe. In 1946, Luis Russell recorded the song, which went to number three on the Most-Played Juke Box Race Records charts. Ray Noble (17/12/ 1903 – 3/4/1978) was an English bandleader, composer, arranger, radio comedian, and actor. Noble wrote both lyrics and music for many popular songs during the British dance band era known as the Golden Age of British music, notably for his longtime friend and associate Al Bowlly, including Love Is The Sweetest Thing, Cherokee, The Touch of Your Lips, I Hadnt Anyone Till You, Isle of Capri, and his signature tune, The Very Thought of You. Doris Day sang the song in the 1950 movie Young Man with a Horn. An instrumental version of the song is featured in the movie Casablanca and is played in Rick Blaines club. In 1961, The Very Thought of You was on the charts again, in a rhythm & blues version recorded by Little Willie John, and three years later a rock and roll version by Ricky Nelson. There have also been numerous recordings of the song by jazz and pop standards artists, including Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole (in his 1958 album of the same name), Carmen McRae, Billie Holiday, the Hi-Los and Elvis Costello; and a blues version on Albert Kings Born Under a Bad Sign album. More recently, Tony Bennett and Paul McCartney recorded a duet version of the song for the formers album, Duets: An American Classic.
