The average cost of gas nationally is $2.42/gal and $2.82/gal in Vermont. Within a 10-15 minute driving radius of our area, several gas stations offer gas in the $2.85-$2.95/gal range. So how is it that local stores can justify selling gas at 70-80 cents above these prices? The only folks who will buy that gas are those who are on empty and have no other choice. I like to try to support local businesses, but this is downright predatory and I refuse to give patronage to businesses that engage in such practices. Even if small stores dont enjoy the lower fuel prices given to bigger chains, you will never convince me that their costs are so high that it necessitates $3.49-$3.59/gal gas prices. Smart marketing for a small local store would be to break even or earn a few cents per gallon in order to attract patrons who might purchase other merchandise that offers a greater profit margin. Instead, you are driving consumers to pass by your stores on the way to larger establishments with reasonably priced gas and, while they are there, buy their morning coffees, breakfast sandwiches, scratch tickets, candy bars, cigarettes, beer, sodas, bread, eggs, milk, and various other items. Those could be YOUR sales. Smarten the hell up!
