The cedars in the back yard are tossing wildly in an icy wind today, and I can see them from my office window. We drove around a bit today and saw the new neighborhoods with big identical houses but NO land, houses two feet apart, no front yards at all (garage door flat up against the street), and only very small trees surrounded by rope barriers as if to keep them away from everything. How blessed I feel to have these restless creatures out there, serving as high rise apartments for birds (and lots of squirrels) that flock to my feeder. Our neighborhood is really overgrown, with huge mature trees that always threaten to fall down when it blows. A stones throw away, its solid bush. Our big cedar was not much more than a sapling when we moved here. Nature closes in and will enfold us and keep us human, IF we let it.
