The death of Om Prakash Omi, a 43-year old contractual sanitation - TopicsExpress

The death of Om Prakash Omi, a 43-year old contractual sanitation worker, while cleaning a drain in Sector-20 of Rohini in Outer Delhi is tragic and painful. Another worker, 34-year-old Sagar, had sustained serious injuries. It is suspected that both workers were exposed to poisonous gases inside the drain. This is not the first incident of this nature. Last year, 3 other three sanitation workers had died while cleaning a drain at Rafi Marg. It is very sad that even in this modern age, authorities still allows manual scavenging where safai karamcharis are risking their lives everyday. What is worse, MCD has norms for compensating only permanent employees but not the contractual workers. This means Om Prakash Omi and Sagar, both contract workers, may not get any compensation from MCD even after risking their lives at work. National Human Rights Commission has rightly asked the MCD officials to submit a report in two weeks, while citing the incident as a serious issue of violation of Right to Life and Safety of the safai karamchari. Aam Aadmi Party demands that MCD authorities properly compensate the victims family and the survivor as well as take immediate action to improve the safety standards of all sanitary workers to prevent such future incidents. thehindu/news/cities/Delhi/nhrc-notices-to-commissioner-civic-body-delhi-police-over-sanitation-workers-death/article6099985.ece
