The economy added 288k jobs in April, well above the consensus forecast of 215k. That, along with 36k upward revisions to jobs added during the previous 2 months, makes this a very solid report. As the blog Calculated Risk notes, we are poised to reach a psychological milestone next month, as we are just 113k jobs below the previous peak in absolute employment set prior to the onset of the Great Recession: in January 2008 there were 138,365,000 employed Americans; as of last month 138,252,000. This, along with other economic indicators, suggests that the economy is picking up momentum heading into spring.
