The evolutionary effort is directed to the building of a still wider dimension of consciousness on the lines experienced by mystics of all countries and times in the higher states of ecstasy. It needs a greater exercise of will power and more of self-discipline to keep a mind, working at higher levels of cognition, in constant check when up against temptations or faced with the never-ending acute problems of life. The emotional content, becoming more powerful at each step of the ascent, needs a corresponding increase in the power of self-control also. It is this disproportionate state of development between the two that is often at the root of the neurotic, discordant, restless, fear or anxiety-ridden, overambitious, unhappy, excitement-seeking, unsatisfied condition of the intellectual mind. Mental tension in all civilized countries is mounting because the life we lead and the social environment we create is anti-evolutionary. This is also the explanation for the totally unexpected and startling revolution that has occurred in the thinking of the modern youth about the validity of the present social organization which has, form the evolutionary angle, outlived its utility; it now poses a real menace to human security and progress. A decrease in the moral stamina of a people is the first symptom of degeneration. A state of constant effort and vigilance is necessary to avoid deterioration of the moral sense, built through centuries of civilized existence. Gopi Krishna
