The facts about the proposed Dog Park are not found on the Responsible Asheville Blog. The Friends of NA Dog Park are working with the city staff and the developer to make sure that any park that is developed will not harm the environment including the Beaverdam Creek and Beaver Lake. Studies have been completed on dog parks adjacent to creeks that conclude that the dog’s urine and feces will not contribute to the pollution of the creek. Please see references below; • Do Pet Recreation Areas Affect Water Quality? (ag.arizona.edu/region9wq/pdf/factsht_SWWQ002.pdf; by the faculty advisor for #22) • Effect of a Dog Park on Water Quality in an Adjacent River (Central Connecticut State U, Dept of Ecology & Environmental Science, Masters thesis project, content.library.ccsu.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/ccsutheses/id/1851) • Fecal Contamination of Water from a Dog Park and Water Potential Changes Affecting Bacterial Survival (U of Nevada, Reno, Dept of Environmental Sciences & Health, Masters thesis project, books.google/books?id=rbNhuhims5YC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false; summary from Sacramento Dog Owners Group: sacdog.org/efforts/Water.htm) • The Influence of Pet Recreation Areas on Soil and Water Quality at Chatfield State Park (study commissioned for the Colorado State Parks Office of Strategic Planning, accompanies the public-feedback report in #14: parks.state.co.us/SiteCollectionImages/parks/Parks/CherryCreek/DTA Water and Soil - Chatfield.pdf) The area along the creek that is designated as a buffer and the area along the creek that is within the flood way will not be modified or developed, an environmental impact statement should not be required. The fenced dog play yards will be kept at least 60 feet away from the creek. The area along the creek is planned as a passive park area with benches and a trail. The Killian House and a ½ acre surrounding the house is not a part of the property that the developer is willing to donate to the city. The decision to set this aside was made independently by the developer. The FNADP have no input on the current status or future of the Killian House. Clearing the underbrush from under the trees on the park site will vastly improve the driving safety along Beaverdam Rd by opening up the right of way with better sight lines. The park will have to meet new codes and standards for park development in Asheville including accessible parking with an accessible paved route to the park. This will benefit a group of individuals that do not have access to many other parks in the area. Dogs and dog parks do not create a lot of noise. This is an assessment that comes from professional dog trainers and dog behaviorists. Dogs that have a chance to run free and socialize with other dogs off lease have lower levels of stress. Dogs that have an opportunity to reduce stress bark less.
