The following rant may offend some people. I dont care. I have only been competing for a year, but I learned from the very beginning there is one key quality that exceeds any other in this sport: respect. Respect for your coaches, teammates, fellow competitors, vendors, promoters, and most of all- the judges. The judges are not ignorant first timers pulled off the street. They are seasoned at what they do, and many of them had careers in bodybuilding themselves. There is nothing more tacky than hearing someone complain about their placing and claiming the judges screwed them over. When you dont win a show, the WORST thing you can do is walk off stage and blame the judges. They are there to do their job, and if you didnt get the placing you wanted maybe you should look in the mirror. Heres another quality you must have in this sport: accountability. Guess what? You aint gonna win them all. Sometimes you have to take a step back and take responsibility. The judges are not responsible for the workouts you missed, the water you didnt drink, the cardio you skipped out on, or the diet you didnt follow. If you didnt place well, its because you werent what they were looking for. Maybe you havent improved since last year.. If you didnt put the work in, its going to show. Maybe you have improved, but maybe the competition was composed of better physiques than you. Whoever you are, dont expect a handout from the judges. No one in this sport is special. There is always someone better than each of us. It might be tough sometimes, but this sport is about critiquing, and if you cant handle it, maybe a hobby like stamp collecting would suit you better.
