The hostile reaction of some members towards the generous - TopicsExpress

The hostile reaction of some members towards the generous programme for expectant mothers in Finland makes me wonder what it is that drives people who feel that way? Why are they (or you) so hostile to the idea of community development, of community sharing of resources and funds? We are gregarious, communal kind of animal - we live in groups, identify in tribes (or nations) enjoy the company of others to the point of becoming insane when permanently deprived of it, and the basic moral and ethical code that governs our cultures is evolved from the earliest stirrings of empathic feelings as a means of maintaining group security and coherence. So why is there amongst us this rather poisonous culture of blind selfishness? And envy? Even the least generous of societies taxes its citizens in order to supply those things which cannot be delivered by privae enterprise. But those countries where the tax burden is shared amongst its citizens in such a way as to ensure that all of them can be supported, educated, treated medically, and supplied with at least the modicum of means to live reasonably comfortably appear to do far better than those which compel their citizens to survive solely on their own earnings - or their wits when no earnings are possible - have high levels of crime, infant and maternal mortality, premature geriatric mortality, epidemic disease, poor general health, ignorance, poverty, and discrimination against minorities and women. So why are there still people who feel that sharing some of their wealth with the community in order that the entire community can thrive, is wrong?
