The images are at once strikingly personal and ultimately universal, depicting the often unseen circumstances of one of humankinds most ubiquitous rituals...In Malawi, in the local language, the words for pregnancy -- pakati and matenda -- translate into between life and death and sick, respectively. Ive always been fascinated with the beauty and suffering that surrounds childbirth and a literal sense of motherhood (to clarify, I believe there are many different ways someone can be a mother). Maybe partially because that is a painful memory for my own mother, whose story is deeply personal and hard to talk about. Or maybe because Ive seen in India women go through this entire process, only to name their daughter unwanted. These pictures are hard to see, but beautiful nonetheless.
