The league should try Rugbys way of kicking extra points (called goals there). 1) Kicker only. No offensive or defensive players. 2) Set point as close or far from the goal line as the kicker wants. 3) Laterally must be as far from the center as the touchdown was. This means some extra points are easy, some very difficult, and its depends upon how far centered or lateral the actual touchdown was scored, This would influence tactical decisions about the touchdown itself, depending on the score. Example 1: If the touchdown is scored right in-between the goalposts there is a high chance, like now in the NFL, that the extra point will be made. The kicker would put the ball on the 2 yard line and easily kick the extra point. Example 2: If the touchdown was caught in the far corner of the end-zone the kicker has to line up the kick just as far laterally as the touchdown, lets say, the far right edge of the field. In order to make the kick possible when lining up that far laterally, he can go back up field as far as he wants to get a better angle on the kick. Even so, this becomes a much more difficult kick, and adds variety to the extra points. Also, tactically speaking, where the touchdowns are scored laterally becomes an issue. Easier extra points for touchdowns centered, and tougher extra points for touchdowns scored laterally. It certainly adds variety. Many extra points are not scored in Rugby, so less of the game is played with tie scores, including the finish.
