The man with unusual symptoms He came to my office with two MRI - TopicsExpress

The man with unusual symptoms He came to my office with two MRI scans, three EEG reports and a huge bunch of medical reports and prescriptions. He was a young man in his early twenties, studying engineering and well settled in life except his unusual but troubling symptoms. His first words were Sir, I am not a psychiatric patient not I am faking my symptoms but everyone thinks I am. His symptoms were very unusual that he used to lose his balance occasionally while standing up or started moving. He often had objects falling off his hands while he changed positions. He also tended to lose his balance if someone or something startled him. These could happen multiple times a day but there was some respite after one attack. For these he was traveling all over India and had consulted multiple doctors including neurologists. But invariably would end up getting prescriptions of anxiolytics and antipsychotics. He could not believe me when I told him that his symptoms matched with an uncommon neurological condition and there is a simple drug for that. His condition is known as Paroxysmal Kinesigenic Dyskinesia and he is doing very well with Carbamazepine. But his main cause of relief is that he really has an unusual disease that has a name. medscape/viewarticle/581684_3
