The next State of the City report Im writing is on Health and Sanitation. As usual, Ill archive this also on the Bengaluru page of my web site when I put out the draft. Meanwhile, I thought I would list the points I have gathered so far, and see what others I get from you all as inputs, while compiling this. (a) Storm drains and sewerage lines are mixed up. (b) Lack of UGD in many places (c) STPs not functional in many cases. (d) Under-utilised treatment infrastructure. (e) Segregate, sort, recycle - not landfill (f) Inadequate decentralised infra (g) Mafia in contracting (h) Plenty of new tech options, but BBMP totally in the dark about these. (i) Lack of civic learning and communication (j) Health hazards neither understood nor monitored. (k) Unreliable (probably fake) monitoring of pollution (l) Low budgets for health and sanitation (m) Public confidence in health system is low (n) Preventive care neglected (o) Expensive private care. (p) No disease monitoring and control program (q) Outdated laws governing hospital data Your inputs, pl? Both problems and solutions are welcome. I will try to close out the first draft by early next week.
