“The party PDP-LABAN has long been advocating this system and makes it the main platform of government since the dark days of the Marcos regime. Mayor Rody Duterte as a bonafide member embodies the principles and practices of Federalism, the system of governance where the problems and concerns of the ordinary Filipino can be addressed more effectively and efficiently, heard and acted upon promptly by their elected leaders.” – (former) Councilor Jackson Velos Reyes, Chairman, PDP-LABAN Davao City Chapter mb.ph/duterte-calls-for-federal-summit/ In addition to what Councilor Reyes has said, let me contribute my 2-cents’ worth. Federalism is democratization of politics, economics and culture. It will decentralize the powers and distribute the resources that are now monopolized solely by Imperial Manila. Federalism is among many strong reasons to support Mayor Rody Duterte for the Philippine Presidency. Only this system of governance will develop the Philippines in an all-around, equitable, simultaneous and speedy manner across sectors, localities and regions. It has to be borne in mind that there are now more than 10 million of our compatriots working abroad. More than 3,000 people leave the country everyday to work abroad. Our policy of sending workers abroad for employment is running against the clock and even against national common sense. Why is the policy of workers’ deployment overseas running against the clock? Consider just one factor: Renewable Energy (RE). The fast development of the RE sector provides us with a silent and ample warning. That is, if we know how to read the signs of the times and the handwriting on the wall. RE currently supplies at least 25% of the energy needs of many countries, most especially in Europe. And Europe is determined to further increase their RE capacity. Every advance taken by Renewable Energy in Europe and elsewhere is a strike against fossil fuels. The Middle East and other oil rich countries are bound to experience precipitous drops in the demand and price of their fossil fuel supplies. And how will our OFWs fare in this state of affairs? There will be less employment opportunities in oil-rich countries as RE capacity increases. Thus job creation in the Philippines has to start now: more than 3,000 job opportunities to be created daily, equal to the number of OFW departures to foreign shores daily. Of course if we fail in job creation, we can always send our OFWs to RE-rich countries. Most likely they will be treated much better there, and earn more, but they may be assimilated and may not want to come back anymore to Las Islas de los Ladrones… Hihihi… 10 million Filipinos in the Diaspora, to be taken back home? This is a complex task of gargantuan proportions; very difficult but it can be done. The Philippines has the resources to bring our OFWs home and provide them with jobs and economic opportunities here - on condition that we have to develop our economy. That’s the imperative of common sense. The way to do that fast and equitably across sectors and regions at sabay-sabay is through Federalism. This system mobilizes all sectors and entities to do their duties and responsibilities. People too as citizens and economic players. Walang turuan, walang sisihan in the federal system of government. You will look silly, if not ridiculous, kung gagawin mo yan dahil the system assigns the working out of your own destiny into your very own hands. Mayor Rody Duterte and Federalism - the Philippines needs both. Only Mayor Duterte and Federalism can fully develop the country, bring law and order and prosperity to all, and bring our OFWs home.
