The promised moving pictures of Wind Cave, Bau, Sarawak. Subject: Quite a lot of bats.. If you look closely to some of the bats looking my way, you can see my torch light reflected in their eyes. This mechanism enables the bats to more efficiently use available light in low light conditions and it hints at their main diet: fruit. This species of fruit bat, Penthetor lucasi or Dusky Fruit Bat goes out at night to attack the forest literally: they use their superb eyesight and sense of smell to locate and sink their teeth in sweet fruits as well as also lick the nectar from certain types of flowers. The species is very social and they hang in dense concentrations, sometimes on top of each other, not unlike a huge wasp nest! The bats roost mainly at the entrances of caves where there is enough diffuse daylight for them to navigate. How about the dark areas of caves? How do they avoid smashing their faces against the cave walls? Hmm... maybe this is why their other common name is Short-faced Fruit Bat.
