The question is do we look at our lives as a problem to be solved - TopicsExpress

The question is do we look at our lives as a problem to be solved or do we see it as a force that just moves us through the days? Perhaps our involvement with day to day activities blinds us to a more creative perspective in which we could explore possibilities that could lead us to a more expressive and interesting life. A Gallup poll recently indicated that 70 percent of working people do not like the jobs that they do. A startling statistic considering that we live in an age when so much information and technology is available to all of us and not just a select few. The possibilities seem unlimited and yet so many of us are dissatisfied with our jobs. In this regard, I had the pleasure of watching a squirrel eating red berries from a palm tree the other day. These clusters of berries do not occur regularly, just certain times of the year. But as soon as they appear, the squirrels and birds joyfully eat the clusters of berries. As I watched their seasonal feast, I wondered if they planned for this beneficial meal or was it merely a fortuitous accident to them. We have a capacity that is different from other animals. We can envision a future; we can plan out our days, and we can learn to become skilled at many different things. Why is it then that we end up at jobs that we do not like? That we literally hate to go to each week? What is sad is that the squirrel might be happier with his fortuitous work effort and meal than we are with our monotonous work effort and meal. Now squirrels and birds have to live the way they do as a result of their biology and instincts, but we, on the other hand, have the ability to more thoughtfully and creatively develop our lives. Of course, we can blame culture, our parents, and reality programs for leading us in the wrong direction, but we cannot escape the final responsibility. It is ours. We have to explore our potential. We have to be daring. We have to go out on a limb like the squirrel if we want to reap glorious fruit.
