The railway line from Windhoek to Karasburg was completed by 1909. In order to assist in the invasion of German SWA (Namibia) of 1914-15 the rail line from Prieska in South Africa was extended to Karasburg. The town Karasburg (Pop 5000) was for a short time the HQ of the southern force of the Union Defence Force. Pictured is a rail bridge just north of Karasburg, which appears to be a military bridge of British origin. There are several other similar bridges in the vicinity.
