The respected elder and Eritrean nationalist, Taha Mohammed Nur, asked for permission to establish a newspaper in the mid 1990s in accordance with the press law, but was then ordered by the Minister of Information to let ‘them read everything before it was printed’. Taha rejected this type of censorship and had to give up the initiative of establishing an independent paper. (Information given in interview conducted 26 February 1997 in Asmara). Kjetil Tronvoll .
