The rising black middle-class later can into industrialists and financiers, especially as our free-market economy allows it. It is posible in our lifetime that commoners aremed with a Protestant/ Calvinistic work ethic can within a decade become a new ruling class, competing with white monopoly capital and tenderpreneurs. But increasingly, the rising black middle-class businessmen and intellectuals show not only their wealth – discreetly -- but they also showed their proudly rigid self-discipline and thrift. We see a new fashion of men dressing much more soberly while dirty money flaunts its wealth. One can also find religious meaning in their own plain old work. The researcher who finds a cure for aids, the teacher who molds young minds, the innovator who finds eazier ways of getting much done gives dignity and spirituality for waking up everyday . Tending conscientiously to one’s secular duties, whatever they were, could be seen as humble obedience to God’s will. Even if the Proffesor or scientist may not be living in a lap or luxury, his pursuit makes us all richer for having him in our lives The obvious benefit of this approach is a pretty powerful “reframing” of how one experiences one’s job. Even menial tasks can be regarded as gestures of obedience towards God. This can infuse one’s whole everyday life with a powerful meaning that had been reserved for particular days of worship He that murders a rand through a life of bling , destroys all that it might have produced. Of course, money doesnt always beget money, though thats one of the common errors of bad economic thinking. The fundamental source of profit is labor and/or natural resources. Profit doesn’t magically appear by saying the words “compound interest,” or “stock market speculation.” Those are just the justifications people give for their receiving more money than they put in. God honors the law of sowing and reaping! Those that go out sowing with tears in a country where simplicity is a curse word will doubtless come back rejoicing, Psalm126.
