The school lockdown in Monroe is now lifted. Three are in custody. One suspect in an apparent early morning assault/kidnapping is still on the loose. Authorities have suspended their search, but released this information, along with a suspect description: On Friday 06/07/2013, at approximately 7:48 am, the Monroe Police received information of a possible abduction that occurred in the Newport area and that the suspects and victims were en-route to an apartment in the 100 block of W. Front St. On arrival officers observed suspects and victims on the sidewalk. One of the suspects was immediately taken into custody and the second suspect fled the area on foot. Officers gave chase but the suspect eluded capture and was last seen in the area of W. Third and Smith St. The suspect dropped a sweatshirt which was recovered by police. Subsequent search of the area, which included members of the Monroe County Special Response Team, Canine Units and the Sheriff’s Helicopter was unable to locate the suspect that fled. Two additional suspects were taken into custody in the 100 block of W. Front St. The victims were both found unharmed. The preliminary investigation revealed that in the early hours of this date four male suspects forcibly entered their way into an apartment in the 100 block of W. Front St., located in the City of Monroe, at gun point. There was a male and female inside of that apartment and the suspects were looking for a third subject, who was not in the apartment but whom the male and female victim are familiar with. The suspects then took the female from the apartment, against her will and drove her to a location in Newport looking for the third party. The subject in Newport was located by the suspects and possibly assaulted and robbed in Newport. The suspects then took the original victim and then drove back to the original location in the City of Monroe at which time they were met by arriving police units. Area schools were placed on lock down as a precaution and the lock down has since been lifted. A handgun was recovered by police at the scene. The suspect at large is described as a black male, early 20’s, 6’0, stocky build with a close cut hairstyle, unknown tattoo on his face, last seen wearing black pants and light colored shirt. The Monroe Police Department was assisted in the search of the suspects by members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police. Members of the Monroe County SRT team as well as the MCSO Helicopter also assisted in the search for the suspects. The investigation is still in its early stages and has been turned over to the Monroe Police Detective Bureau. Anyone with information is requested to contact the Monroe Police Detective Bureau at (734)243-7519.
