The teacher and the administration overstepped their boundary and violated the childrens freedom of religion. I dont buy the admin not knowing what was going on because the teachers have to discuss with their admins what they are doing for lessons. And going outside to pray to Allah would have required the schools permission to do so. I taught religion during one of my long-term sub assignments and believe me its it important to stress being respectful to what you are learning...and it is only a small amount of information they are receiving...how the religion began and where it is practiced in the world is usually what is taught. I allowed the kids of different faiths to discuss their religion if they wanted to, just so the kids could actually hear from the actual practioners and not from textbooks. I asked them to explain what it was that they did and why they did it. A Jewish student brought in a menorah and he explained the meaning behind it and why they used it in their celebration of Hanukkah. I never would have asked the kids to pray during this time, because it was a time of learning and not worshipping. Im furious that this teacher would push children into practicing a religion that wasnt their own.
