The weather in South Florida has been quiet. However, space weather has been active. Three high events of X-rays (from solar flares) have occurred in the last week (see peaks in X-ray flux in the second image below). The latest discussion from NOAAs Space Weather is also included in the link below describing the solar conditions and forecasts. It is fairly normal for the sun to be active at or near the peak of the solar cycle. See also the sunspot numbers associated with the current solar cycle. Latest solar discussion: swpc.noaa.gov/ftpdir/latest/forecast_discussion.txt Visit spaceweather.gov for the most up-to-date information. When a solar flare occurs, the flare’s X-ray energy increases the ionization of all the layers in the ionosphere. As the lower layers get ionized they become strong enough to reflect the radio waves at a lower altitude. The lower the waves reflect, the more collisions, or interferences of waves, there will be because of the thicker atmosphere. This effect degrades radio communications during periods of solar flares.
