The weather was cold and wet as we pulled off the state highway to visit the mass grave site at Wounded Knee. Theres no road sign to alert drivers-by that this was where hundreds of Sioux Indians were surrounded and killed. These were peaceful Indians, not those who were said to terrorize settlers. These were people whod signed treaties with the US, losing more and more of their sacred land. None of the protections promised by these treaties were honored. How interesting, that these people who were seen as untamable should have descendants who faithfully serve to defend our freedom. And you could so easily drive by this site and not know it was of any consequence.
