The writer has established that Jesus is LORD over all creation in relation to time; He is also over all creation in authority and dignity. As the expression of the Father His supremacy confirms... And himself is the head of the body--the assembly--who is a beginning, a first-born out of the dead, that he might become in all things --himself--first, (Colossians 1:18 Youngs Literal translation) Jesus is the Head of the called out! By the translators using the assembly or church, is not meant any particular congregation, not any organization - but the whole election of grace. NOWHERE does it refer to anything resembling what we call the church today! Jesus is the head; He is the representation of this body of the elected from all eternity; He is in a sense the political head, as a king is to his subjects; He reigns in the Believer by his Spirit and grace, inscribing on our hearts; He protects and defends us by His power. He is an economical head, having provided everything we will ever need for life and Godliness. Jesus is the beginning of a new spiritual life: by His resurrection, which is His “regeneration,” even as His people’s are resurrected and “regenerated” with Him in Salvation. That is, the resurrection which was begun in the spirit, by metamorphosis extends to the soul and the whole creature, making a new creation after the likeness of Jesus. The writer has carefully laid out these truths concerning Jesus to show that Jesus, He Himself (as the Greek states it) might have supremacy; total position, rank and recognition in the lives of the ekklēsia- called out! Praise the LORD to be part of the called out! Give thanks that you were called out of the world and made the righteousness of God IN the anointing of Jesus.
