Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.” Jeremiah 1:9-10 (NIV) We find Jeremiah setting aside his opposition to be used by God as he is yielding to God. Jeremiah is being given his commission to give forth the message of the fall and rise again of the nations. His message was one which would give the nation of Israel a roller coaster ride. God appointed Jeremiah to bring His word to “nations and kingdom.” Jeremiah’s work was to warn not only the Jews but all the nations of the world about God’s judgment on sin. We should not forget in reading the Old Testament that, while God was consistently working through the people of Judah and Israel, His plan was to communicate to every nation and person. We are included in Jeremiah’s message of judgment and hope, and as believers we are to share God’s desire to reach the whole world for Him, even those who hate us and we are their enemies. We need to believe that God’s Word is sovereign over the nations and all of history. A person of faith takes God at His Word and realizes that God is committed to His Word. He knows that God honors His Word above His name and has settled in his heart that God intends to bring His Word to fulfillment. A believer remains confident in God’s promises and takes His warnings seriously.
