There are two battles of WWII that fascinates me the most. First is the battle of Ivo Jimma. They say more than four thousand u.s. Marines died on the beach. Only in the first wave assault more then 1000. It was like this. Japaneese had one very smart and competent general. Tanamici Kuribayasi was his name. He was putted in charge of defending the island. He ordered trench digging throughout whole island, so japaneese were trenched in several etages underneath. Americans were superior. They made very good bomb preparations before landing. They said it would took three or four days to clear the island. But, how they were wrong. When landing began, japaneese let americans land on the beach. So, americans landed about four thousand troops and supplies. At that point japanees uncovered their digged artillery, there was about 70 or 80 artilllery pieces. And they held americans under heavy shell fire about 45 minutes during which more then 1000 americans died. You see, there was one problem for u.s. Marines on the beach. The beach of island Iwo Jimma was not made of regular sand. Rather it was of vulcanic ashes of the nearby mt. Suribaci. So, marines who were trenched on the beach sufferd from serious burns caused by vulcanic accid sand. They could not stand for long time. At the end, americans conquored the island because of their superior force and early deadh of gen. Kuribayashi. This was exausting battle that took over three months with lot of casualties. The second battle that fascinates me happend in europe,germany. It was the opposite. It was fast, dynamic battle with only few casualties. It was called battle of Remagen bridge. When allyes entered germany the only bridge that had left was Remagen bridge on the river Rhine, somewhere in country side before Berlin. So, allyes(americans) planned to use this bridge for fast moving towards Berlin. Germans got their plans and moved rapidly towards the bridge and putted explosives underneath bridge. But explosives failed and germans called their luftwafe stuka airplans to bomb the bridge. Luftwafe failed too, there was a short battle and allyes finally menage to get the bridge and cross over it...
