There are two usual trajectories for careers in rock music. Either a band releases a great debut album, a strong follow up album and then spen the rest of their lifespan trying to capture the original magic. Otherwise a band can take a few albums before releasing their best work, have a period of classic albums and then endure a slower decline. A similar rule applies for solo artists. As a consequence final albums tend to be quite forgettable. For instance Led Zeppelin, who even had a label called Swan Song Records released Coda which sounded like a contractual obligation (because it was). Even artists who die have a tendency to have passed their best days several albums beforehand. Despite this there are still a number of artists who have managed to go out with some of their best work, the two best examples being the band The Police and the duo Simon and Garfunkel. Although if you ask a Metallica fan there is good chance that they will claim that this song is from their last ever album. https://youtube/watch?v=CD-E-LDc384
