There has been some confusion on what it takes to adopt an animal from the Hutchinson Animal Shelter. I have verified this information in the hope that those that are interested in helping an animal find a good home will try the Shelter. Please, If you have have had a problem with the Shelter this is not the place to air your complaints, we are trying to find home for the unwanted animals in our city. The Hutchinson Animal Shelter has anyone that wants to adopt an animal to fill out an application, you can do this even if the animal is still on the 3 day waiting period and even if there is already an application on the pet, many times people change their mind. The application asks if you have a fence, it is not a requirement to have a fence to adopt but the Shelter doesnt want the dog to end up chained in the yard either, they will check with your veterinarian to see if your other pets are current on shots, they will verify if you own your own home or if you rent they will check with your landlord to make sure they accept pets, many times animals are returned because they arent allowed in rentals, they do not come out to your house for a home visit (if you are applying to be a foster home they must come out for you to be licensed with the St of Ks), they will do a mini background check to make sure there are no animal cruelty charges on you or any active warrants, The adoption fee is $100, which includes the pet being spayed/neutered, current on shots, cats checked for FIV and dogs over 6 months heartworm, they will be microchipped and you will have a voucher for your 1st veterinarian visit with a participating vet and you will receive a collar tag. If the pet has already been fixed its adoption fee is $50 and the Shelter runs specials all during the year. There are rescues in town that do require more information and checks. Please consider adopting from the Shelter, its a wonderful value. The only way to stop pet overpopulation is to have your pets fixed If you cant afford it check out the STOP program with Cause for Paws Inc. causeforpawshutch.org
