There was a brief confrontation between Dr Wayne Kublalsingh, leader of the Highway Re-Route Movement (HRM), and Power 102 talk-show host Garth Christopher yesterday outside the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair. But in an interview shortly after, Kublalsingh denied a confrontation erupted and instead described it as a “strong discussion.” The incident occurred around 10.30 am, when Kublalsingh went to greet Ravi Maharaj, who began his own hunger strike in support of the controversial Debe extension to the Solomon Hochoy Highway. His camp is across the street from Kublalsingh’s. On why he wanted to visit Maharaj, Kublalsingh said: “Yesterday when I was leaving I found he looked very exhausted and he was sitting on the hot concrete and I just felt he needed some solidarity so I went over to express my best wishes to him.” He said it was during his conversation with Maharaj that Christopher approached. During the discussion voices were raised as both sides remained resolute in their conviction. Christopher told the environmentalist he had been championing the HRM’s cause for years but he had no statistics to prove his point. “At the end of it all you have been doing is building a case for years and you don’t have any statistics and you are not representing the majority,” Christopher said. Kublalsingh shot back: “How do you know we are not representing the majority?” Christopher again demanded Kublalsingh show the statistics, saying: “The amount of voices you are hearing and the voices are out there... and you would just be going around in a circle... if you are representing a cause you should have the statistics readily available and you don’t... you are playing games.” Kublalsingh then walked away from Christopher and headed back to his spot. But Christopher shouted after him: “During your last hunger strike you said ‘Power to Wayne.’ What you mean by that?” Kublalsingh denied making such comments. Yesterday he completed Day 30 of his strike and maintained that despite doubts expressed by members of the public he was neither eating nor drinking He said he felt dehydrated and a bit weak. A handful of HRM supporters, led by Harvey Borris, chairman of the Centre of Justice, walked twice around the OPM building yesterday in support of Kublalsingh
