There was drama in the normally quiet suburb of Bayview in Strandfontein on Monday night when an explosion took place at a house in Watussi street. While police have not confirmed whether a device was detonated, a few residents told VOC News they were sure it was a bomb. No one was injured during the incident. The explosion took place shortly after the waqt of Esha. “It was very loud…my windows were shattering,” reported Gadija Stegman, who lives a road away. According to another source, who asked to remain anonymous, the blast was a huge shock.“We generally don’t see things like this happening here. Bayview is a quiet area…people are tense now.” Residents gathered in the street as the police, fire services and bomb squad rushed to the scene. Strandfontein Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson Sandy Schuter said the bomb squad combed the house for clues but could not find any evidence to prove it was a bomb. There were no reports of any suspicious activity outside the house and speculation is rife that a device was planted inside the house. Schuter said the CPF were unsure of the motive for the attack, but could confirm that the house was that of an alleged drug dealer. “It definitely is the home of a well known drug merchant. But we really don’t have any proof of a bomb. It could have been a gas tank,” she said. Locals are being questioned about who regularly visits the house and who was at the residence at the time. “The neighbours standing outside saw an explosion inside the house and smoke coming from the rooftop. The people inside had vacated the house. When the police went after the people who ran away, they lost track of them. We don’t know who was in the home at the time,” said Schuter. She said the CPF could not disclose further information, because police are still investigating. “Police told me they did not find any trace of a substance to prove it was a bomb. They searched the home from top to bottom and they found nothing. So we are all uncertain…”
