There were 25 participants at the whole day workshop, ‘The ABC of Behaviour Development.’ It was a very productive day covering the work of Dr. Albert Ellis focusing on his ABC Theory of Emotional Disturbance as a teaching/learning model and as a counselling tool. Principal Veronica Conley opened proceedings with a warm welcome and an acknowledgment of the traditional owners of the land, the Parnkalla/Barngarla people. We explored ways in which teachers can embed REBT principles and practices in the curriculum through Rational Emotive Behaviour Education. Participants said: - ‘This is relevant to my teaching. I can’t wait to use it.’ - ‘Rational Emotive Behaviour Education helps students understand why they act and feel as they do!’ - ‘I can help students understand how they can never be worthless by teaching unconditional self acceptance.’ - ‘REBT can help students, teachers and parents develop and enhance their personal capabilities.’ Participants also indicated that they would welcome follow up professional learning opportunities in term 4 at the ‘Albert Ellis Professional Learning Centre.’ Next term the focus will be on anxiety and depression and how best to support young people using Ellis’ pioneering ABC Theory of Emotional Disturbance. Public education is served well by these dedicated and enthusiastic educators, caseworkers, social workers and regional support service personnel who travelled from near and far to attend this workshop. In Albert Ellis’ centenary year his work remains relevant and goes from strength to strength here at Whyalla on the Eyre Peninsula, in regional South Australia.
