Theres bound to be so much grey area surrounding surveillance of any kind. This app lets users mark a police presence on a map, where others can see and use that information however they choose. Cops are arguing that it puts them at risk; a reasonable assumption. The data that the app provides is no different than what could be placed on any webpage for all to access. The app is only an interface. As the article points out, theres a double standard being held by some officers, such as the ones who think they should be able to use a cell phone stingray device. This is something that can intercept all cell service in the area and identify the phones user and location, as well as eavesdrop on all incoming/outgoing data. When you say its to help track down murderers, it sounds like its not so bad. But then you might realize how much of your life is connected to your phone, and someone else wants full access to that without your knowledge or permission.
