These are pages from the Yorkshire Life magazine, November 1963, the article is entitled If Whitby Dies and is very interesting because the closure of the railway line is discussed and also ...... The Whitby Town Clerk, William Wright says As a Council we are trying to attract suitable new industries to Whitby to cope with the already serious unemployment problems, but the two threats - one of railway closure, the other to the fishing industry are having a detrimental affect. The potash industry could be a life saver (this is 1963 bear in mind) No final decision has yet been made as to whether the test borings are suitable. Sounds familiar.
