These shocking accounts are NOT rare and are NOT unbelievable at all! When the dust settles about the lack of governance and accountability; abuse of power and privilege and downright incompetency in the Gardai, GSOC and charitable organisations maybe we can start a BIG conversation of the same pervasive rot in our schools. This article is only one tiny example. Schools are no longer education centres for children - they are workplaces for teachers. Parents have no power, pupils have no power and self governing BOMs controlled by teachers and principals run the show. The Dept of Ed has no control or accountability and the Ombudsman for Children has no jurisdiction for schools (the only exclusion in his powers). There is NO course of action a parent can take if they have a grievance against a teacher or a school...NONE, other than civil litigation through the courts. And we are sitting on our hands!
