They Ended At The Somme. I lit a candle tae yer name Tae France ye went Never tae come hame, The Great War it was called Thats where ye went On Flanders fields Yer life was spent. The bullet fired It had yer name As it flew through the air And then hit hame. But ye were jist anither Tae fa that day Many a thoosand lifes Were also taen away. The war tae end all wars Some were heard tae say it wull be over by christmas We wull be hame oan Christmas day. But nae one told the bullets Or the bombs they had tae cease As soldiers drapped aroon the fields While aithers prayed fur peace. So miny a muckle young fit lad A life wasted in the mud and mire Bravely followed the captains command And ran intae the enemy fire The land is now fields of poppys Young lads beneath their roots Still laying in their uniform Tin helmet and hobnailed boots. Unknown soldiers the tomb stone it wid say But families aroon the country Knew who had passed away The empty chair at Christmas Anniversaries spent alone Birthdays they stopped coming They ended at the Somme.
