“They Will Develop Self-Control” Today’s Verse: “Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.” - 1 Corinthians 9:25 (NASB) Learning to control our emotions, actions, and attitudes is one of the most important tasks any student will face. Self-control is contrary to our “do whatever feels good” culture. So many people go through life without this character quality, and because of it, spend years dealing with problems of their own creating. A person who lacks self-control will say things and do things that hurt themselves and those around them. Self-control is at the heart of self-discipline. Many people will develop self-control so they can be better athletes, or to wear certain cloths, or make better grades. As Christians we develop self-control for a higher goal, to please our Heavenly Father. Self-control is the last of the “fruits of the Spirit” listed in Galatians 5, and the Apostle Peter instructs us to make it a part of our faith in 2 Peter 1. As you pray for your student, ask God to help them develop self-control. Pray they become masters of their emotions, actions, and attitudes. As they journey through their life as a student pray for the fruit of self-control to become part of their character. Sample Prayer: Father, I pray you will give Childs Name self-control. I pray Childs Name will learn to control their emotions, actions, and attitudes in a way that will please You. As they develop self-control, I pray they will bring glory and honor to You. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, and give them self-control. In Jesus Name, Amen (Feel free to copy and paste the following message, or use it as an example to let your student know what you are praying for them today.) Today, I am praying that you develop self-control. I know that doesn’t sound like much fun, but it is one of the ways we bring glory to God. I am praying that today, you live filled with the Holy Spirit, and that you walk in self-control.
