Things that I have learned about on the job injuries through the families of injured firefighters: 1) Don’t get injured… 2) If you do get injured, get your own attorney, of which worker’s comp should pay for costs. There should be a form to fill out within 30 days of your incident. Ask your attorney; don’t rely on worker’s comp or the city. 3) Be vigilant about YOUR health care. Do not let worker’s comp decide what you should or should not do as far as medical procedures. It is YOUR health, not theirs… 4) Be prepared for the city to use your FMLA benefit time concurrently with your worker’s comp. In essence, because you are not getting paid and worker’s comp has not yet been processed, you run the risk of having a negative paycheck. And, if you don’t pay for your insurance within 48 hrs., your policy will be cancelled. 5) Do not let the city sway you into early retirement or disability. They approach you when you are vulnerable, not when you have had time to recover from your injuries. Don’t even entertain the conversation; direct them to your attorney. 6) If people want to donate small cash sums to the families, take a collection and hand deliver it. It is more personable and you know exactly where it ends up. 7) If people want to donate large charitable donations (tax deductible), please do your research. Not all non-profits are in it for the right reasons. The families may never see a penny of these donations. Yes, this is the world we live in…this is how we take care of our heroes…
