Thinking about bringing a Theme Camp to Burning Seed next year? - TopicsExpress

Thinking about bringing a Theme Camp to Burning Seed next year? Here are some wise words given to us (Bean Bag Babylon) when we first were starting out from a Theme Camp veteran friend in America. This is what Ive seen work: The best theme camps arent born fully fledged, but evolve towards optimum by learning from interactions and challenges. Do something that grabs people off the street and starts some interaction; not just a one-way service (from you) or a challenge (to them). Its just a party after all: dont make anyone do anything they dont wanna do. Our camp is a big network of departments for all aspects of survival and party. We have a Troika of camp leaders overseeing a larger number of department Tzars who each have a small Strike-Force dedicated to their mission. Its a hierarchy, but one based on how much time and energy you have to donate to your camp. Which is also my most important advice: dont try it alone!! Delegate; divide and conquer. Run it like a tight NGO: lean and well accounted for. Ask for realistic dues, pay what it costs (but often need a silent benefactor to provide financial cushion). Fund raisers are best at raising money for specific projects, not paying general bills. Re-use, thrift-store find, dollar-store, donate, dumpster-dive and steal from back alleys. Feed everyone! Its more efficient, cheaper, lower burnout rate and encourages family dinner-time. Make your back-of-house chill-out-area just as nice as your front-of-house public-interaction-area. Use heavy equipment whenever possible: lifts, trenchers, augers, it all rocks. Use the best rigging: strongest poles, ropes and hardware at all points and guided by someone who knows what theyre doing. Use real logistics: Rental trucks and shipping containers, not Sallys friends RV roof.We store the bulk of our camp near the event in a 40 shipping container. Transport only Art, new toys and consumables. Do as much work beforehand as possible: what takes one hour At Home takes four hours On Playa. Thats enough from me!Go ask someone else!! ObiBob in USA
