Thirty years ago, Pi Sigma Epsilon created what it called “the world’s largest burrito” at Cal Poly Pomona. The 50-foot burrito was part of a service project for a national competition. The burrito-making event became an annual tradition for the marketing fraternity. In 1990, Pi Sigma Epsilon created a burrito that was 201 feet long (see pictures). It consisted of 300 tortillas, 151 pounds of beans, 75 pounds of cheese, 75 pounds of lettuce, 75 pounds of tomatoes and 10 gallons of salsa. The burrito stood 3 inches high and 4 inches wide. The fraternity made the 1990 burrito to raise money for the Life-Savers Foundation, a nonprofit organization that recruits donors and raises funds to combat blood-related cancers. Faculty, staff and students could buy tickets were $2 and get 6 inches of the burrito and a can of Pepsi. Tickets were sold out in 25 minutes, and a total of $1,200 was raised. The event was co-sponsored by Pepsi and TGI Friday’s and was covered by TV news crews. Pepsi matched the funds raised by the fraternity.
