Thirty years ago, on the set of I WAS A TEENAGE ZOMBIE, Allen Lewis Rickman (Big Al from the Rock) explained to me that film comedy works best as a box, meaning as much of a scene as possible should play out within a single shot (Sidney Lumet believed the same thing, only with regards to drama). Its a theory that holds up as often as it doesnt, but it has validity. GAVE UP THE GHOST is a comedy, and Im allowing editor Chris Cosgrave (Its Coz-grave) to take first crack at the material. Hes two thirds done, and doing an excellent job. Whether intentionally or not, hes hewing to Big Als theory. This means that even though we shot plenty of coverage, its still going to look like a film directed by Greg Lamberson. :)
