This asks a powerful question. While living as The Default, i.e. matching the cultural conception of normal, how is individual identity to be understood? Progressive white folk seem to identify by what they are not. Conservative white folk seem to claim a subculture (as in flying a Confederate flag alongside a US flag) for identity. But the pull toward The Default remains strong as is the projection by others (white or POC). How do white Americans free themselves from bland orientation to The Default? Im remembering the parable of the wealthy young man. Knowing ones true self, living ones identity, beyond allowing The Default to dominate, seems important. It is only in knowing and living as true self that living fully is possible, On St Franciss day, I remember the story of Francis as a wealthy young man stripping himself, literally, of his clothing, the symbols of his being held by The Default, and setting our on his own quest to be with God; to live fully.
