This brilliant article reminded me how much I love independent bookstores. It features photos that will melt the heart of all but the most technology-loving bibliophile! Im not averse to new technologies -- I read most of my books on Kindle these days, since I travel so much and read a lot while travelling. This is a changing world, and I think the internet has been mostly a good thing for the world of books, making it easier to find out about new work, and making that work more accessible than it has ever been in the past. But of course Im not blind to the problems it has generated too -- many book shops have closed since the start of the internet, along with many major bookselling chains, and unfortunately I think thats a trend thats likely to continue. But I do think its still possible to make a go of a bookstore, if you have enough love, courage, imagination, determination and luck. I hope there will always be a place in the world for shops like the ones in these photos, because it will be a poorer place without them. Speaking of new technologies -- Ive switched over to a new computer at home over the last few days. Making the move is far easier than it was in the past, but its still a pain, especially with Windows 8.1 placing the emphasis on Apps, which I have no time for or understanding of -- away with your damn Apps, and leave me to my beloved desktop!!! I suppose the move towards the cloud will make setting up on a new PC even easier still in the future, since everything will be stored in one place virtually, and it will be simply a case of logging on and plugging in -- but Im still wary of the cloud, clinging to having everything on one PC, with physical backups in case it crashes. Foolish, I know, but I guess in the world of the web, Im what youd consider old-school...
