This chia seed update is for my pal, Jessica Colp. :-) *************************************** Chia seeds have a great nutritional profile. They are excellent sources of omega-3 essential fatty acids, protein and fiber. (Two tablespoons of chia seeds provide 10 grams of fiber! That’s awesome!) Chia seeds also contain trace minerals, such as magnesium, manganese and phosphorus. One benefit of chia seeds over flax seeds is that chia seeds can be eaten whole or milled, while flax seeds have to be ground before consumption in order to access their health benefits. There has been lots of talk that chia seeds – in conjunction with a healthy diet- may have super powers, but there are few published studies with humans, so more research is needed before their super powers can be verified. Overall, though, I think they are a great addition to your diet. Know that a two-tablespoon-serving adds 140 calories to your daily intake and you will want to keep that in mind as you look at the big picture. P.S. Remember: As you increase your fiber intake, you’ll want to increase your water consumption. Fiber and water go hand in hand.
