This connects with my other verse, "Blessed are the Meek for they shall inherit the earth." It was pointed out that the Meek do not react to provocation and immediately jump in to defend themselves. I am not speaking of defending yourself against a rapist or killer, which you certainly should do if you can. But life is full of so many other provocations. Gang members are fighting all the time, because they are ready to lift arms at the slightest provocation to their honor or their reputatation. Couples in trouble are arguing all the time, because each is ready at the slightest negative tone or insinuation to refresh the argument. A meek person is not necessarily a weak person, but rather a tame person. In the verse below, Paul speaks of biting and devouring and consuming one another in petty squabbles which never end. For an argument to stop, someone has to have the last word, and the bigger person has to let the last insult or blow go unanswered. A meek person can take that last hit in the name of peace and love. To avoid a life of constant conflict, we must learn to take some blows from time to time and leave them unanswered.
