This court case is coming up soon. A protest is being planned at the Land and Environment court. Rio and the State Government are appealing their recent decision by the Land and Environment court to stop the expansion of the Mount Thorley Warkworth open-cut coalmine. Rio Tinto’s energy chief executive Harry Kenyon Slaney wrote that a ‘serious cloud’ now hangs over more than 150 infrastructure projects—including hospitals, roads and wind farms—worth tens of billions of dollars. The State Government agrees and has drafted new planning rules that prioritize the economic benefits of mining over the social and environmental cost. What do you think is the right balance when the government considers a mining project? Are you affected by this or other mining projects? Are they generating jobs in your community or having a negative impact?
