This honor song for Leonard... I remember when it was given, and its an honor to hear it still being used. Gwarth-ee-lass was a name given to Leonard by the late Ethel Pearson, Leonards adoptive mother of the Kwakiutl Nation of British Columbia. Gwarth-e-lass means He who leads the people. This revered Elder lobbied all of her nations chiefs and held a traditional Potlatch to formally adopt Leonard as her son and member of the Kwakiutl nation. This was Ethels contribution to the struggle to try to stop Leonards illegal extradition to the United States, which ultimately failed as a result of the U.S, governments FBI agents who falsified three affidavits in detail in order to get their man. 38 years later and nothing has changed! In 1989, Ethel stood with us once again in support of our appeal of Leonards extradition to the Supreme Court of Canada. The Supreme Court never denied that the actual fraud took place and recommended we go back to the government and seek a political remedy, which we have continued to do right up to this day. So, its time to stop the injustice and free our brother, Gwarth-ee-lass, Leonard Peltier, now! To Izzy Pangowish, and to all our peoples, we say, thank you and carry on the struggle! Through the long, hard darkness, we pray, let there be light. Miigwetch! Frank S. Dreaver/LPDCC
