This is a QCCR news announcement. Energy Minister Andrew Younger announced today at the former Bowater site that two private companies, Lightsail Energy and Watts Wind, have teamed up to create a Wind Turbine energy facility at the mill site. There will be 3 large wind turbines constructed approx. 5 km from the former mill site and an energy storage building on mill property. These turbines will create approx. 4 megawatts of energy, which can be stored in special batteries for later use as needed. This new innovative clean energy production and storage system, which has never been put into commercial use until now, is the brainchild of Danielle Fong, a former Dartmouth resident, and chief scientist at Lightsail Energy. The project has several major financial backers based here in Nova Scotia and also internationally, including Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft. Construction should begin in second quarter of 2016. It is anticipated that the site will employ 45 to 50 people during the construction phase, but no numbers were immediately available regarding the number of jobs that will be created on a long-term basis at the site once it is up and running.
