This is a photo that my dad took of his best friend from Brandon MS, Arthur R. “Wheels” Hunter, Jr. He was rank of QM1 in the U.S. Navy and assigned to the USS Indianapolis. They took “the gimmick” over to Tinian for application to Hiroshima. When the ship was torpedoed on the way from there to Leyte Gulf, there was no answer to their radio distress calls. The ship sank in 12 minutes. 300 of the 1196 crewmen died then, and 880 were in the water for four days. Only 316 men survived. Hunter was not among them.
